Tocha surfer development camp - Portugal

ready to surf?

This is a intensive surf coaching camp for intermediate to advanced level surfers. 3- 5 days of dedicate surf coaching for a max of 6 people.

We stay with our friends Brian and Claudia from the wonderful Ticket2Surf surf house in Praia Da Tocha, Portugal. The house sleeps 12 people in bunk room, twin or double rooms, has a large kitchen and open seating area. The house is a short walk from one of this area of Portugal's best surfing beaches and a short drive from a number of world class surf spots which gives us a range of wave types and locations depending on swell.

The Camp:

During the camp we will cover everything from surf awareness and surf strategy, technical manoeuvres such as bottom turns, top turns, Speed generation, combination moves etc. We have taken competitive surfers out in the past on several trips for pre season training camps as well as intermediate surfers looking for a guided / coached surf trip.

You will be hosted by Matty and Brian and possibly one of our other coaches. Apart from day time surf sessions, we also will spend some time in the evenings reviewing your waves using video analysis and enjoying some good food in one of the local traditional restaurants, Brian's amazing BBQ's or simply making our own depending on what folks would like to do. We aim to get two surf sessions a day but can put in surf skate sessions to reinforce techniques if required or if folks are tired. If the surf is too big / small we can travel to any number of beaches such as Cabedelo, Costa Nova or maybe a secret spot of our own. Yoga sessions can be arranged with Claudi at sunset on the beach, very relaxing post surf!

As the camp is supported by JANGA wetsuits we will also have the opportunity to visit the famous JANGA Warehouse for some amazing deals on their wetsuits and clothing.

'Our goals

Our aim on these camps is to develop each surfers surfing as well has spend some time relaxing in the Portuguese sunshine. Sometimes we will work on a group task other times it might be more personal to your own surfing development. Please discuss with us what you are looking to work on, improve or develop from the camp so we can tailor things towards your goals. We like to start with an assessment surf so we can gain an idea of how you surf and areas for improvement and go from there. Competitive surfers wishing to use it as a training camp can include some dedicated sessions on such things as heat strategy, priority, understanding scoring potential and working on advanced surfing moves.

Surfers

Surfers should have their own equipment and be able to catch waves by themselves, be confident in the ocean and swim at least 100m's continuously. Ticket2Surf has a small range of boards if you need to hire something and a range of JANGA wetsuits. In some cases we can lend out different boards to try should you wish to try something different.

Catering

The camp is self catering as we normally get a diverse range of diets and likes. We usually eat together in the evenings and lunch times we normally grab something at the beach. The village has a couple of mini markets or a short drive to a bigger super market can be arranged. The town has several bars, with Piholo being the famous local tavern. SUP hire, Yoga sessions and Bike Hire can be arranged separately.

Surf

The local surf breaks are all typical Portuguese beach breaks with sand bottoms. The waves can be bigger and stronger than normal UK surf spots but we try and find a spot suitable for the group as a whole to surf depending on ability levels and goals.
